There’s so much to love about winter - the scarves, the boots, snuggling up by a fire, sleeping in and taking some much-needed time out to rest and reflect. But with the good, comes the inevitable - the cold, the dry skin and of course everywhere you look you can’t help but spot someone with the sniffles a cough and that tell-tale rosy nose. Yep, flu season is upon us.
But just because the germs are out in full force doesn’t mean they have to win. There are so many easy to make home remedies to help combat those flu-induced blues.
An age-old combination known for its flu-busting abilities is the classic honey, ginger and lemon. But what if you could take that classic combo and turn the dial up ten notches.
Here’s a recipe for the ultimate hot-toddy.
4 cups water
2 cinnamon sticks
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp cloves
Pinch of cayenne
2 ginger slices
½ squeezed lemon
2 tbsp honey
80ml rum (optional)
Combine water and spices in a medium sized pot and mix well, bring it to a simmer over medium heat, add the remaining ingredients and let it steep for 5 minutes. This is best enjoyed as hot as possible and you can always add a little more honey to suit your taste buds.
Stay warm, keep healthy and remember to drink lots of liquids, get lots of rest and always wash your hands before you put in your contact lenses, especially when you’re sick.
